Using Data and Algorithms to Make Complex Financial Products Safer: Celebrating Olin Prize Winner Grant Schwartz

Please join us in congratulating Grant Schwartz, recipient of the John M. Olin Prize for Excellence in Economics. A graduating economics major, Grant is recognized for his outstanding thesis, “Risk, Ratings, and Tranches: Algorithmic Ratings of Asset-Backed Securities,” which develops a data-driven, open-source framework for evaluating complex asset-backed securities using machine learning and stochastic modeling.

His work offers a sophisticated and transparent alternative to traditional credit rating methodologies, with particular insight into the auto ABS market and its implications for household credit and systemic risk. Grant’s research exemplifies analytical rigor, originality, and real-world relevance, and we are delighted to honor his achievements with this year’s Olin Prize.
